Pop/Soul has a new name, and last night at the Troubadour, LA was introduced to him. Please welcome your new guilty pleasure into your playlist: Sam Smith.
The smooth, honest sound of retro soul has taken many trips from the likes of Memphis and Detroit, to the UK and back again, but for some reason this time it feels different. Sam Smith channels so many great vocals from yesterday and does what they did best, making it look easy. He delivers songs like “Lay Me Down” so effortlessly, it’s as if the lyrics are just pouring out of him.
At he doesn’t just shine on emotional ballads, Naughty Boy has leaned on him, featuring Sam’s vocals on his single “La La La”.
Expose yourself to that song once, and the sticky tenacity of that hook will surely get stuck in your head for the entire day.
