We all know about Domino's famous "30 minutes or it's free" policy on deliveries. We've heard that for years. And although the free pizza rule is no longer in effect, Domino's says it continues to guarantee that you will get your pizza delivered within 30 minutes. And when ordering pizza for delivery, waiting around is always the hardest part. But there's nothing more heartbreaking than seeing your delivery time get delayed. Well, that's because Domino's has been experiencing longer delivery times than is typical for the chain, and the company admitted this issue came to light during the pandemic.
Domino's CEO Ritch Allison said on an earnings call last week that delivery times have not been where they should be: "With the challenges that we've had in staffing, we haven't made the service gains and improvements that I would like to see here in 2021," he said, as reported by Food & Wine Magazine. The delivery times, in Allison's words, "are a big area of focus for us as we look going forward."
So what's causing the delivery delay is a shortage of labor at Domino's locations nationwide. Labor shortages are impacting chain restaurants nationwide, including small local businesses, and in some cases are affecting prices. Even some items at chains are becoming more and more expensive in order to compensate for the higher wages that companies are now offering their team members to further entice new employees. On the call, Domino's CEO said the goal is to not only hire more drivers but to address productivity in the pizza shops. "We are spending a lot of time looking at how we can get more efficient in our stores. And frankly, how we can deliver better delivery times with the same or, in some cases, even fewer drivers," he said.
