Emma Corrin Says History Is Repeating Itself With Meghan Markle

It's almost time for a new season of The Crown to debut on Netflix. Fans of the historical drama are especially excited for the upcoming fourth season because Princess Diana, who will be played by Emma Corrin, will be introduced as a main character.

While chatting with Town & Country about the fourth season, Corrin discussed the similarities between Princess Diana's experience joining the Royal Family with Meghan Makle's current situation. “You just want to shake these tabloids and say, can’t you see history repeating itself?” Corrin told the outlet.

Not only did Princess Diana deal with the toxic tabloid culture when she married Prince Charles, she also dealt with friction within the Royal Family, as well. “The coldness, the traditions, and the expectations of behavior… I don’t think [Diana] expected that,” Corrin added. “I think she expected to join a family.”

Corrin's conclusion that Princess Diana and the Duchess of Sussex had similar experiences isn't unique. Prince Harry has spoken openly about his own personal fears that history is, in fact, repeating itself with his wife. In October 2019, The Duke of Sussex announcement he planned to sue Associated Newspapers, which publishes The Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday in the U.K., for publishing the contents of a private letter Meghan wrote to her father in 2018. In a lengthy statement explaining his decision, Harry wrote that he fears "history repeating itself" as he watches his wife "falling victim to the same powerful forces" as his late-mother.

"There is a human cost to this relentless propaganda, specifically when it is knowingly false and malicious, and though we have continued to put on a brave face – as so many of you can relate to – I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been," Harry continued in his statement.

Later that year, Harry echoed these sentiments during an interview with ITV. He said watching Meghan deal with the same things his mom suffered through takes him back to the devastating aftermath of her death. "“I think probably a wound that festers," Harry, who was just 12-years-old when his mom passed way, said of his lingering grief. "I think being part of this family, in this role, in this job, every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash, it takes me straight back, so in that respect, it’s the worst reminder of her life as opposed to the best."

For fans of The Crown who hope to see Meghan's story portrayed on the small screen one day, creator Peter Morgan nixed the idea while chatting with Town & Country. "The Meghan and Harry story is nowhere near over yet," Morgan said. "And I’m happy that I’m never going to write it."
