The Man & The Matriarch: Scott Patterson On Emily, Lorelai, & Luke

GILMORE GIRLS

On this episode of I Am All In, Scott Patterson and his producer Amy talk about Gilmore Girls season one, episode six, “Rory’s Birthday Parties,” which kicks off debates: Scott is on Emily Gilmore’s side, while Amy is on Lorelai’s, prompting discussions about class, wealth-signaling, culture-keeping, and Emily’s true intentions toward Rory. Plus, Scott reveals why Luke is so grumpy, which blows Amy’s mind; he dives into Emily and Richard’s DNA and uncovers their Viking roots; and of course they all dive into their favorite lines (“Doesn’t it look like something you could find at a car wash?”) and the many pop culture references “you have to be smart AF to get.” Scott and Amy’s serious investment in the characters and their choices make this rewatch podcast one of the best around.

In the episode, both Emily and Lorelai plan a birthday party for Rory; Emily’s is a fancy affair, with flowers and catering and embossed invitations, while Lorelai’s is a more casual get-together. Scott feels like Rory is a little ungrateful to her grandmother for throwing her the fancy party, but Amy kind of gets it: No 16-year-old girl wants to be forced to give a toast at a fancy party she didn’t ask for, which is full of people from her school who she hates and who hate her. But Scott thinks it was done with good intentions, saying Emily and Richard probably knew that Rory was having a hard time at school, so the party was more about “saying to the other families, ‘Don’t mess with this girl anymore. She’s Somebody.’...It’s a power move,” he says. Lorelai, by getting pregnant at 16 and breaking away from the country club life, doesn’t have “the right pedigree” anymore, but Rory can still have it. Though it’s questionable that she wants it: While she seems to be somewhat attracted to the upper-crust style of living, she still prefers the party her mother threw for her.

But Emily is no fool; she sees right away that Luke and Lorelai may have eyes for each other, telling Lorelai that “the iceman looked at you like you were a porterhouse steak.” But then Lorelai seemed to “get your goat” at the diner the next day, Amy says. Scott clears that up for her by explaining that Luke is grumpy all the time because he’s been in love with Lorelai since she got to Stars Hollow, and he knows she’s out of his league and that she doesn’t respect him. By the time he finally kisses Lorelai in season four, “That’s 20 years he’s been sitting there. 20 years in love with that woman and not feeling worthy, knowing the gap in class and wealth is keeping them apart,” he says. “It’s amazing the guy didn’t explode in season two!” Amy’s mind is blown: “Here I am thinking he’s only liked her for six episodes!” Hear all this Gilmore Girls goodness and much more on this episode of I Am All In.
