Boy Scout leaders believe that it's time for change and want to let girls in some of their programs.
They believe that there needs to be more options for parents, but the Girl Scout organization has criticized this act, so starting next year, the Boy Scouts plan to admit girls into the Cub Scouts and want to establish a new program for older girls but using the same curriculum as Boy Scouts.
Cub Scout dens which is the smallest unit will be single- gender either all boys or all girls. The larger Scout groups will have the option to remain single gender or welcome both.
The program for older girls is expected to begin in 2019 and will give them the chance to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.
They board of directors stated "We believe it is critical to evolve how our programs meet the needs of families interested in positive and lifelong experiences for their children."
The Girl Scouts of the USA criticized the initiative, stating that it strained the century-old bond between the two organizations.
They believe this move was driven by financial problems and need to boost revenue.
