What To Know About India's Biggest Festival, Diwali
According to USA Today...
Diwali - being observed today - is India's biggest festival, the "festival of lights." Its origins are Hindu, but the festival has been embraced by Indians of many faiths.
Among other things, Diwali celebrates the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi. During the festival, people leave their doors and windows open to welcome her in.
People also set off firecrackers and light lamps known as diyas, which signify the victory of good or evil. The actual dates of the 5-day festival change every year, based on the Hindu lunar calendar, but it falls between October and November.
