Which Turkey Brands Are Linked To The Recent Salmonella Outbreak?

Consumer Reports is calling on the government to name the brands involved in the outbreak of a drug-resistant strain of salmonella that is linked to raw turkey products.

According to the CDC, since last November, 164 people have become ill across 35 states due to outbreaks.  63 people have been hospitalized and 1 person has died here in California as a result. The outbreak is linked to live turkeys, ground turkey and turkey patties.

They advise you to wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw turkey.  They also advise you to cook your turkey thoroughly to avoid getting sick & thaw the turkey in the refrigerator, not on the counter.

So will the USDA release a list of the turkey affected by the salmonella outbreak before we do our Thanksgiving dinner shopping?  This is what they said in a statement...

"The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service has not identified a source or supplier of the product or products that are making consumers ill.  If we had specific products that we could alert consumers to with a public health alert, we would issue one.  Consumers should always handle raw turkey carefully and cook it thoroughly to prevent food poisoning."
