McDonald's Loses "Big Mac" Trademark

McDonald's Loses "Big Mac" Trademark

But worry not, American McDonald's fan...this only applies to Big Macs in Europe.  McDonald’s has lost the trademark to its “Big Mac” in Europe.

In a landmark “David and Goliath” battle  Irish fast-food chain Supermac’s has convinced the European Union Intellectual Property Office to cancel the trademark, which has been in place since 1996.

If you've never heard of Supermac’s, you're not alone...many Americans (including me) are just now learning about them with this Big Mac news.  Here's a little about the company...Supermac's has 106 locations across Ireland and Northern Ireland.  And now with their lucky victory over McDonald's, Supermac says it can now expand in the UK and Europe.  Btw...Other companies can now also use the "Big Mac" name.
