After seeing thousands of residents risk spreading the coronavirus by flocking to the beaches last weekend, Los Angeles County officials have decided to shut them down.

Making the announcement on Friday March 27th, County Supervisor Janice Hahn said all L.A. County beaches, piers and promenades are closed, effectively immediately."The crowds we saw at our beaches last weekend were unacceptable," Hahn says. "In order to save lives, beaches in L.A. County will be temporarily closed. I understand that this is a huge sacrifice for everyone who enjoys going to our beaches. But we cannot risk another sunny weekend with crowds at the beach spreading this virus."

Although the county says the beaches will remain closed "until at least April 19th," Hahn says they may reopen earlier or later, depending on "when it is safe to do so."
