Zayn Malik had a big year in 2020 in his personal life and an even bigger start of 2021 with the release of his new album "Nobody Is Listening" and most recent track with Ingrid Michaelson "To Begin Again." Zayn called into Valentine in the Morning to talk all about his new music, fatherhood, and his future plans with Gigi Hadid.
Zayn released his third studio album "Nobody Is Listening" back in January and it was a bit ironic that this was the name of the album considering everyone was listening to it, especially during quarantine.
"The reason I used that as the title, I just meant generally that people aren't really listening to one another as human beings when people speak. I feel like a lot of people right now love to give an opinion and love to speak their mind, but they don't really like to listen so it was just a nod to that. You can always learn and better yourself from listening to somebody else's opinion even if you don't agree with it."
Zayn just released a new song with Ingrid Michaelson today called "To Begin Again" and it turns out the collaboration came about just because he was a huge fan!
"I was listening to a lot of her music around the time I asked my management if we could reach out to her and ask her if she wanted to do a song. I was just really inspired by some of the lyrics and some of her own solo music. I just wanted to work on something with her and she responded rather quickly and was really professional about everything. We got things done pretty quick and she was an amazing artist to work with."
Zayn and girlfriend Gigi Hadid welcomed their daughter Khai into the world back in September so when we congratulated him, he couldn't help but gush about fatherhood.
"Honestly, it's amazing. A lot of people that I was speaking to obviously before she was born and stuff were like you know it's a big adjustment and it's going to be a massive change and stuff, but honestly she's an amazing baby. It's been really easy for me and Gig to kind of just ease into it. She's made it really easy for us, she sleeps really well and she loves her milk. It's just feeding and changing diapers at the moment. It's wicked, i'm enjoying it for sure."
When it comes to parenthood your life will obviously change, but Zayn was surprised to see a major change in himself.
"I didn't expect to be quite as into it to be honest with you. I always into myself just doing my own thing of just writing, recording, making music, and I was just very focused on my career. I had time for my relationship too, but it was still solely about me. The fact that she [Khai] has been so easy to kind of just adjust to, it's been surprising to me because I just love spending my days with her, hanging out with her, and just doing really relaxing and chill stuff with her. I'm watching kids shows with her on TV and on Netflix, learning nursery rhymes, rolling around with her, and just singing to her. It's a really different pace of life, but it's been really easy to adjust and that's the most surprising."
Now you're probably wondering what kind of lullabies Zayn is singing to Khai and he said he's pretty much making stuff up.
"I kind of make stuff up to be honest...it's mainly melodies and she kind of makes sounds back to me, which is amazing. It's not necessarily a specific song, I just like singing to her. It's pretty cool."
Zayn and Gigi have been in quarantine living in Pennsylvania as a way to get away from everything, but he gave us insight of how he pictures his future.
"I haven't really thought about settling down yet, even though we've had a kid and stuff. We're still thinking about work and things we want to do career wise, but yeah in the far future when we eventually pick a place to settle down in. It would be something kind of similar to this, you know a relaxed environment, where we can just relax. I love being out here, it's a massive change from the other places I was staying at originally from when I first moved out to the States so I like this kind of place, it's chill and it's nice out here."
